NURSES

Are you passionate about caring for the sick? Do you have an interest in the medical field? Becoming a nurse can be a challenging yet rewarding career path.

How do I become a Nurse?

There is currently a lack of qualified and skilled nurses in South Africa, and this provides a number of employment opportunities for those who want to enter the nursing profession. Nursing is a skill in high demand, and that makes it a great move for those wanting a secure career.

As a certified healthcare worker you will be able to use your skills to serve in your community, work in private practice, or provide home care.

The fields of practice include but are not limited to:

  • clinical nursing
  • treatment and care
  • midwifery
  • administration
  • psychiatric nursing
  • management roles

Learn as much as you can about these positions before you decide on your healthcare path.

So, you're interested in becoming a nurse. Good for you! Let's take a look at some guidelines to follow in order for you to make your dream a reality.

Once you know which discipline you are most interested in, you will need to obtain a qualification in that field. You can obtain any of the following levels of qualification:

  • Higher Certificate
  • Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma
  • Bachelor's Degree

Prospective applicants are required to have completed their National Senior Certificate or must possess an equivalent qualification at NQF level 4 in order to access these higher education training programmes.

There is also an opportunity for individuals who already have practical experience in the nursing field to obtain a qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

An application must be submitted according to the RPL policy of the Nursing Education Institution for individual assessment. The credits received from this assessment can be used to access qualification or credit bearing exemptions.

You can complete your training at a registered institution. The South Africa Nursing Council has compiled a list of accredited training institutions around the country.

Can't afford the training fees? Look out for bursaries, internships and scholarship opportunities on the Careers Portal or consider a student loan to help you reach your goal.

If you already have a nursing qualification you can find employment opportunities in the national press or on the SANC website.
