SASSA is now on a mission to clear up misunderstandings when it came to the agency suspending over 200 000 temporary disability grants. They are now advising beneficiaries to apply for the SRD R350 grant.
If applicants are in dire need, they are advised to apply for the Special Relief of Distress grant so that they have sustenance while they wait to be assessed and approved for the temporary disability grant.
210 778 beneficiaries had their temporary disability grant suspended. This was due to the grant reaching the end of it's period where beneficiaries did not need to submit medical reviews. Now, if they want to continue receiving funding through this grant, they have to obtain medical reviews.
SASSA's CEO, Busi Memela, said:
The affected people will only be temporary disabled persons. Therefore, not unless people got confused because it was extended for a year, that they thought they were under permanent disability but in each and every case where a person has been assessed, it's indicated that it's temporary and the period that the grant will exist for is always indicated to the client upfront.
The temporary disability grant is there to provide relief to anyone who has a condition which results in them not being able to work temporarily. This grant is not for individuals with long standing or permanent conditions which makes them unable to work long term. These individuals would then have to apply for SASSA's disability grant.
In order to benefit from the temporary disability grant, a medical review is needed which states that the individual is temporarily unable to work due to a medical condition for six to twelve months.
They would need to go to the doctor, get assessed and then receive a letter from the doctor. Following this, they would then apply for the grant and then be seen by one of SASSA's medical doctors. From here, SASSA then decides whether they qualify or not.
Clients are currently going to all the different branches so that they can assess and decide which ones can be given temporary relief while they going through this process.
This is being done on a case by case basis and has put immense pressure on SASSA branches. They will now put plans in place so that they can begin to use other halls or work with SASSA doctors in their own environments.
Each applicant should go to a branch nearby and get an appointment to be assessed.
